The single "Solitude" gained support at VH1, prompting the release of 1997's Misguided Roses, which launched a mainstream hit in the song "I'll Be". Signed to Lava in 1995, McCain made his major-label bow with Honor Among Thieves.

When Hootie landed a deal with Atlantic Records and enjoyed massive chart success with their major-label debut, Cracked Rear View, in 1994, they persuaded Atlantic's Lava subsidiary to take a chance on McCain. McCain's dynamic band (anchored by lead guitarist Larry Chaney) gained respect and support slots for similarly minded artists like Hootie, Jewel, and even the Allman Brothers. McCain displayed a work ethic similar to Hootie's, bringing out a pair of self-released albums (1991's Nomadic Logic and 1993's Solitude) and playing as many as 300 dates in a year. While playing bars throughout the South, McCain developed a loyal following, and crossed paths with another up-and-coming South Carolina act, Hootie & the Blowfish. After making friends with a musician who introduced him to jazz-fusion acts such as Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius, McCain developed a keen interest in songwriting, and he began playing out as a solo act. Growing up, McCain was interested in vintage soul and R&B (including Wilson Pickett, Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind & Fire) as well as classic rock (particularly Van Halen, Kiss, and Queen). McCain's father, a doctor, was involved in the music program at the local Episcopal church, and the young Edwin got his start in music singing in the church choir. I especially appreciate Edwin giving me his permission to do this and I thank him for the rich contribution he has made to our state with his talents and craft.Ī rootsy singer/songwriter whose music is also influenced by jazz and soul, Edwin McCain hails from Charleston, South Carolina, and was born on January 20, 1970. I am honored to post this showcase page for Edwin and I appreciate his management and publicity team for all their help as I gathered the materials together. Everyday things such as love, hate, passion, pain, and joy are blank canvasses where his brush cuts a delicate stroke connecting exponentially to other lines until a masterpiece has taken form, have you read the words to Holy City?, this man can write! Relying on a lifetime of personal encounters and relationships with real people to pull from as an endless resource of storytelling material. In a world of digitized singers who rely on a stable of hack writers churning out the next “moon-june-spoon” Edwin stands apart. Of course the other side of this coin is the written word or the art of composing a lyric and it is here you realize that Edwin McCain is blessed twice. His delivery is half the experience and his signature vocal is a trademark in itself that simply must be recognized. There’s something extraordinary about Edwin’s voice as it reaches out grabbing the lyric and taking possession of the song. 2018 marked the 20th year of the success of "I'll Be," which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades. And once you’ve heard Edwin McCain sing you can’t help but believe in that statement. Even Justin Bieber has been known to belt out "I'll Be" during his own concerts. Those enduring love songs (and wedding must-haves) "I'll Be" and "I Could Not Ask For More" aren't just for the romantic at heart "American Idol" and "The Voice" contestants turn to McCain's ballads every single year to help them win over judges and fans alike (just ask last season's AI winner, Nick Fradiani). I am incredibly grateful to be able to do this," McCain said.
"The 15-year-old me would have crawled through a river of fire to be the 48-year-old singer/songwriter that I am today, and I remember that.

After recording two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music and experiencing the success that comes with a television show on Animal Planet ("Flipping Ships"), McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the US as a solo artist, with his full band or his acoustic trio.
His hit songs, authentic spirit and surprisingly affable sense of humor keep fans coming back time and time again for nights that feel more like parties with old friends than rock concerts. Called the "great American romantic" by the New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years by balancing his massive pop success with the year-round touring schedule of a tireless troubadour.
